Climate Change and the Farm Bill with Jonathan Coppess
Every five years, Congress reauthorizes the myriad programs in the Farm Bill. The current law, the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018, will expire in 2023 and the next Congress is expected to attempt reauthorization. This presents an opportunity for adding action on climate change to the bill. Addressing climate change in agriculture—reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving resiliency, and practices that can help capture and sequester greenhouse gases—is increasingly a priority for many Members of Congress and interests. This discussion will review the farm bill and its history, as well as recent developments and the potential for the next farm bill to make real progress on climate change issues.
